In our kitchen at Bocci’s, the feasting of past generations is re-created. Hand-pulled mozzarella and fresh grated Parmesan cheese, pastas made on premises, homemade sauces, and bread baked daily are all traditions which, in true Italian custom, reflect our love and commitment for simple, good food.

Bocci’s, at 158 Church Street, is steeped in Charleston history. Built in 1867-1868 by the Molony family as a combination residence/business, it was home to Charleston’s first Irish Pub – if you look carefully at the building from Cumberland Street, you can see the "Jax Beer" advertisement. During statewide prohibition in the 1890s, the bar was secretly moved to the back of the building, where it operated as a speakeasy, while out front, the owners conducted business as a grocery store. After the 1930s, the building was turned into a private home. Many prominent Charleston families lived there before it was reopened as a restaurant.

Architecturally, 158 Church Street reflects the popular antebellum building style of post-Confederate War and has been given a Preservation Society of Charleston award for outstanding restoration.

Though the building’s activities have changed many times, the original structure remains intact. That, and its view of beautiful St. Philip’s Church and the downtown Market, keep its history alive.
